Get the Glow – A Step by Step Guide to Spray Tanning

You may or may not be going to an exotic overseas destination this summer, ready to get that healthy, fashionable caramel coloured tan. Either way, Frontlinestyle can offer you the perfect solution to getting a wonderful all-over colour, so that you can hit the beach in style or enjoy a glamorous summer closer to home.

We have compiled a step by step guide to ensuring that you get the perfect finish to your spray tan – easily and effectively.

We would also like to add that if a spray tan is not for you, Frontlinestyle offer a wide range of great products from acclaimed brand Sienna X, so that you can get a wonderful glow in the comfort of your own home.

Smooth Operator

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. That is the key to getting an even, streak-free tan which doesn’t have unsightly dark patches and areas that are denser in colour than others. Keeping your skin smooth and hairless is another factor that is vital in creating that all-important golden glow, with hair removal needing to take place 24 hours before the spray tan. Also, we recommend moisturising any dry areas of your face and body so as to again, ensure the tanning formula develops evenly and seamlessly.

Top Tip: Go swimming! The chlorine will soften your existing tan which will make it easier to scrub off when you have a shower or bath in preparation for your next tanning session.

Go clean, go pure

It’s best to avoid wearing perfume or deodorant, as perfume can create unsightly patches on your skin where the development of your tan has been blocked by the fragrance residue. Deodorant can go green as it reacts with the tan on contact, so it is advisable to avoid wearing any scent when you spray tan. Makeup will also need to be removed if you’re having a head to toe tan, with Frontlinestyle providing you with gentle makeup remover pads to ensure you’re prepped, ready for your tanning session.

If you’re brave enough, have a shower before your session and cold rinse, which will close the pores of the skin and promote the optimum finish.

Au naturel or deep and dark?

It is entirely up to you as to how dark you want your tan to be. You can opt for a subtle honey glow or an exotic, burnished copper tone – the choice is yours. Your therapist and you can discuss the best shade for your skin tone, requirements and colouring.

We suggest that you let us know what the occasion is that you’re tanning for, so that we can advise you on the best shade for you. If it’s a wedding or party, you may want to choose a lighter tone so it looks natural in photographs and if it’s pre-holiday, you may want to go darker so that your colour lasts for the duration of your vacation. If you’re really undecided, flick through some magazines and bring an image of the shade you like – we will be able to match the shade so that you look and feel fabulous!

Trust the Process

You will need to completely undress (in private) for your tanning session and remove all jewellery to avoid damaging your skin and your prized possessions. We will provide you with paper knickers to wear during the tanning process. A hair net or turban will also be provided to protect your hair but you will need to keep your ears outside of your hair covering to ensure that they get tanned as well.

Your therapist will start by applying the tanning formula to your face (with a state-of-the-art spray gun, specifically designed for this process.) It may feel really cold – don’t worry, this is normal. They will work down your body from top to toe, spraying the front first and then the back, making sure the tan is applied evenly and gets into all the hidden creases. This is to guarantee a true, all-over colour.

Hang Loose

Do wear loose clothing after your tanning session, preferably black or dark colours so as to avoid friction which can make you sweat – affecting the quality of your tan.

Bathing Beauty

You will be able to shower after approximately 8-10 hours after your spray tan but we do recommend you stick to showering rather than bathing which can result in the tan being soaked off. Avoid shaving which can create a streaky effect as you literally shave your tan away! Moisturise regularly to maintain your glow and get an even fade.

Above all, enjoy your healthy glow – just in time for the summer season!
